3 Months!

Wow, where has the time gone? Most of the time, I look at little Lukas and wonder how he's so big already. Where did these past 3 months go? I only vaguely remember him being so small and quiet... these days, he's just the opposite. At least I can (mostly) laugh about it now though. After all, I'd go crazy if I didn't find the humor in all of this.

So where has the past month brought us? To totally new places.

In early January, Lukas had his 2 month checkup and weighed in at 12lbs 7oz, was 24 inches long and had a small head (I can't remember the exact head circumference number and I'm too lazy to get up and figure it out). While we won't have another checkup until the end of February, I'm sure the kid is at least 14 lbs by now. Compared to what his sister was at this age, that has qualified him for the nickname "chunky monkey" around the Kadzban household. I can't believe how not-so-little my baby boy now is! It's shocking to me at times when I look at him and realize that my newborn has transformed into this baby. I'd say I want my newborn back but the reality is, I can't do the screaming every day, all day bit over again.

Physically, Lukas's neck control is getting stronger every day. He's great at tummy time but usually only lasts for 5-10 minutes before he starts screaming for me to pick him up. He loves the sound of a rattle and will follow it across the room. He also loves to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse with his big sister, probably because of all the bright & bold colors. He's still not a fan of being put down but will stay in his bouncer seat for up to 30 minutes at times. His swing is still a no-go... he absolutely hates it and I just don't get that!

Personality-wise, things have gotten better and worse. The one thing that hasn't changed is my little boy's temper.... it's a sight to be seen! I always explain to people how he goes from 0 to 60 in 30 seconds flat and I have a feeling they don't believe me until they see it for themselves. When he wants to eat, sleep, or be changed, he wants it NOW. His cry is more like a shrill, screeching scream and I worry that he's going to destroy my already poor hearing. When he cries, his face turns beat red and those beautiful blue eyes make the biggest crocodile tears I've ever seen. It's pitiful and usually it's all over nothing.

We may have a drama king on our hands to go perfectly along side his sister, the reigning drama queen of our house these days. I'm sure Mike and I have lots of "good" times to look forward to still. ;)

There are some fun sides to his personality coming out though. The kid's smile will light up a room with just one flash. He's starting to giggle and best of all, he's "talking" up a storm these days. There are times, like this morning, where he just babbles for 10-15 minutes on end. I love hearing that sweet little voice! He's found his new favorite toys - his fists - and he sucks on them like they've got milk coming out of every little wrinkle. He's taking in his environment more and more and loves to look around whatever room he's in.

While still short, his hair is starting to fill in and it's pretty apparent that he's going to be another little blondie like his sister. He loves his bath as it seems to help calm and relax him. Bath time is always special for another reason too.... Liana loves to help give her brother a bath. She gets her stool and stands right next to me while he sits in his tub on the counter. With her own washcloth, it's usually her job to wash his belly or his feet while Mom takes care of the rest.

At bedtime, Mike and I divide and conquer. Mike puts Liana to bed every night.... multiple times! While she typically heads upstairs between 7:30 and 8pm, Lukas and I sit tight downstairs for his last meal before bed. By 8:30 he's usually swaddled and in bed, which is now his crib. We made the transition from his bassinet to his crib earlier this week and while I was quite anxious about "letting him go", I knew I had to as he was quickly going to outgrow the bassinet and I didn't want him to get any more attached to it than he already was. Since moving to his nursery, things have been going well. We're doing all of our night-time feedings in his rocking chair instead of downstairs and I'm finding that I enjoy it more like that.

Sleep is still a major issue. While at 2 months he was waking only once a night, he's now waking up twice a night. It's amazing the difference that second nighttime feeding makes! When he was waking up once, I was getting a good 5-6 hour stretch of sleep in before he woke up and then usually another three hours after his feeding. With him waking twice now, I have to go to bed by 9 or 10pm (usually 9) in order to feel even halfway rested as he wakes me between 12 and 1 and then again between 4 and 5. Without that long stretch, I'm feeling pretty exhausted as my body can't hit those deep sleep cycles that leave me feeling rested. It's making for a miserable mommy who's short and snippy with those around her... something I feel pretty terrible about. But still, I know that this could be much worse and I just keep reminding myself that at some point, we'll both sleep better again.

Naps during the day still feel non-existent. The mornings are the same as they were at 2 months... wake up around 7:30, feed, and go back down for a 30 minute nap by 9am. At that point I shower (even though I just want to nap too....) and get Liana and myself ready for the day. Later in the morning he'll take another 30 minute nap and during the afternoon, I'm lucky if I get two more. It baffles me why he won't sleep longer than this but from what I've read online, it seems that this is common with babies his age. Selfishly, I wish he would sleep more because then it would give me a chance to rest myself  or do something around the house. By far, this is what I've struggled the most as I get absolutely no "me" time during the day unless it includes shipping my kids off to my parents for a few hours. Having a quiet lunch while watching one of my DVR'ed shows really goes a long way for my sanity these days... unfortunately, it happens rarely.

Since going back to work last week, Lukas has been taking more bottles but I almost always breastfeed him when he's home with me. The kids spend Wednesdays and every other Thursday with my dad and then go to my grandparents on Fridays. So far, things have been going smoothly and while I was initially worried as to how my dad would do with a baby as young as Lukas, he's doing great! Last week, on his second "official" day of watching my little guy, Lukas puked on four outfits, had a poop explosion in another, and peed all over my dad. I couldn't help but laugh when he told me this after I got out of work and when I got home, I told Mike, "Well, if he could make it through today, I have no doubt he'll make it through anything else."

While part of me hates being back to work, there's another part that welcomes the "break" it brings. It feels good to get out of the house a few days a week and interact with other adults.

Liana continues to be quite the little "mommy" to Lukas... and now mimics me whenever she interacts with him. She says a few key phrases that I often have said to him, like "Hi bud!!" or "Hey buggy!" in exactly the same tone (long, high-pitched and drawn out) I use. Every time he cries, she says, "Mama, Lukas is crying! He needs to be fed!". She's so attentive to him and he loves her for it. One of my favorite things (though slightly annoying at times) is how she uses Lukas as a tool to get whatever she wants. For example: "Mama, Lukas reaaaally wants to watch Einstein right now." Good grief, this kid is too smart for her own good. I'm probably going to pay the price for that some day. :)

Happy 3 Months baby boy! We love you to the moon!

The annual wrapup.... 2011 style.

In all honesty, I hadn't even thought about my annual wrapup post until the other night when I noticed others posting theirs. Oops! I suppose it's safe to say my mind has been elsewhere lately.

Without further ado though, here it is. Enjoy! :)

After having a pretty rough 2010, I have to admit that 2011 was a pretty good year for the Kadzban family. Aside from Lukas's arrival, which made the year wonderful all on its own, we had lots of other things to be thankful for.

January
As we started out the new year, Mike and I debated on whether we were ready to try for another baby yet. After months of not feeling quite ready, we realized that we were and then found ourselves very disappointed to find out near the end of the month that we hadn't gotten pregnant. Liana got to go sledding with Daddy for the first time this month after the Blizzard of 2011 gave her plenty of snow to do so in. And my baby was a 'mommy's girl' through and through....
February
The second weekend of the month brought great fun as we ventured to the east side of the state to visit with the Kranz's in celebration of Charley's birth and Lily's 2nd birthday. I realized this weekend that my fears about Liana not being ready to be a big sister were unfounded as she was quickly fascinated with Charley and didn't mind sharing her mama's attention with her as she had done with all other babies in the past. About a week later, on the 23rd, Mike and I found out that we were expecting our own baby! My heart was so excited but so scared at the same time. The final weekend of the month, we headed east one more time to be there for Lily's party.
March
The month my baby girl turned two! This is also the month where she officially became a "terrible two". Opinions became loud, tantrums became frequent, emotions became wild. Through it all though, I found myself loving her even more. We celebrated her birthday by taking her to Frederick Meijer Gardens to see the butterfly exhibit and having a quiet day at home, just the three of us. Two days later, on the 26th, we had our family and friends over to celebrate. The pregnancy kept me on my toes all month long as I was anxious about the things that could go wrong. We had a miscarriage scare on the 9th, which coincidentally was the night before I had to take my already-stressful licensing exam. I'm not sure how I made it through that test, let alone pass it, but I thank God that I did. Later that day, Dr. LaGrand did an ultrasound and for the first time, I laid my eyes upon one sweet little baby and one beating heartbeat at six weeks. My heart had never been put to ease so quickly.
April
This month, we passed the ten week mark and I finally started to feel safe within our pregnancy. I helped to throw a baby shower for my dear friend Jessie. On Easter Sunday, at 12.5 weeks, we finally announced our pregnancy to the world!!
 May
This was an emotional month for me for a number of different reasons, both good and bad. Our baby would have been born in May and as a result, I was in a major funk for the first two weeks as I tried to navigate the miscarriage waters one more time. Our friends, JJ and Jess, gave birth to their daughter Madison near the end of the month and while I thought this would send me into a tailspin again, it actually did the opposite. Holding Madison made me feel excitement over everything that was still to come with our own baby.  The end of the month was busy for us as we had Liana's two-year photo session and then my peanut and I traveled to the east side of the state again over Memorial Day to spend a long weekend with the Kranz's. We visited the Detroit Zoo and had a ball... well, aside from the many tantrums both two year olds gave us the pleasure of dealing with. ;) My family also experienced some hardships this month that left things a bit uncertain for a while. Finally, we remodeled our kitchen this month and transformed the center of our home from a blue abyss into something beautiful and warm!

June
The start of the month brought us something we had been anticipating since February... our 20 week ultrasound on the 13th! It was at this ultrasound that we discovered we'd be adding a baby boy into our mix and I saw pure relief wash over my husband as he'd now have a son. I don't think I'll ever forget the smile smeared across his face when we left our doctors office and it sunk in that he'd actually have someone to share his passions with. At the end of June I celebrated my 28th birthday. And as a gift for my mom's birthday & Mothers Day, I bought her a mini session so that she and Liana could have their pictures taken together which turned out great!

July
July was a month of chaos for us. In preparation for baby boy, we put ourselves into full gear to get the house ready. As my projects usually go, one project became another and pretty soon things started spiraling out of control. Liana got to experience her first "real" 4th of July this month as this was the first year that she really got into the festivities. Brittany and I went to the Taylor Swift concert on the 28th and while I was incredibly uncomfortable sitting in those small stadium seats at 26 weeks pregnant, I still had a blast. Finally, Mike and I celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary on the 1st! We didn't do much for our anniversary (and honest to God, I can't even remember why...) but regardless, it was a milestone that meant a lot to both of us.

August
A month of changes!! Liana's "big girl" room was finished and she officially moved in on the 18th. It was so bittersweet!! I couldn't believe my baby girl wasn't so much a baby anymore and that it was time for her to leave her crib behind. We also got her a swingset soon thereafter and I swear the kid thought she had died and gone to heaven. In addition, we ventured into the adventures of potty training this month.... and failed miserably! Friendships changed this month and unfortunately, not for the better.

  September
We started this month out by taking our first and last vacation as a family of three to Chicago over Labor Day weekend. While there we visited Brookfield Zoo & Shedd's aquarium, both of which Liana loved. It was so wonderful to be able to get away with my little family for a few days and truly enjoy each others company. Liana became officially potty trained the last weekend of the month. We finished the nursery and also painted the downstairs bathroom. I threw a baby shower for our cousin, Laura, who was due just 3.5 weeks after I was. Mike celebrated his 28th birthday on the 19th. Also this month, I became hugely pregnant and while I felt physically ready to have our baby, I was far from emotionally ready as I just wanted to soak every second up with my family of three before we became a family of four.

October
The month it all came down to. My hormones were raging throughout October as my body prepared to bring a baby into this world. I couldn't sleep, couldn't eat well and was just pretty miserable overall. While potty trained, we still struggled with certain aspects of it and Mike and I were quite nervous that adding a new baby into the mix was going to detonate the "potty training bomb". I anxiously prepared for my maternity leave at work which couldn't have come at a better time as I was definitely ready for a break. Lukas Ryan was born on the 27th and brought an immeasurable amount of  joy to our lives once again. I did still find myself remembering the baby that I had lost exactly 364 days before he was born and while I knew that Lukas could never replace that baby, he did help mend my broken heart.

November
Our first few weeks at home with Lukas flew by. I had forgotten how much work a newborn was and how exhausting they could be! Mike stayed home with Liana, Lukas and I for the first week after we came home from the hospital and then my mom was here to help for the second week. I healed quickly from my c-section and found myself so thankful that I had chosen to go that route even though it wasn't easy at the time. Around the 10th we noticed that Lukas was becoming much more fussy as he cried a majority of the day and after taking him for his 2 week checkup, we discovered that he had reflux. It was terrible to see my baby in so much pain all the time and listening to him cry constantly really did a number on all of us. He remained like this throughout the remainder of the month. The Kranz's came for a long weekend to meet baby Lukas and my heart beamed at seeing Liana and Lily play together like the best of friends. On the 14th, our cousins Laura & Matt welcomed their little girl, Kate, into this world and the Kadzban's couldn't have been any happier for the Pridgeon's on the beautiful addition to their family. :)

December
December was most definitely one of the best months of the year for us. While the first few weeks remained tough with regards to Lukas, he began to settle down around the middle of the month. It was at that point that we got to see more of his personality emerging and we loved what we saw. I found myself loving my time at home with the kids more and more as each day passed. The holidays came and went in a flash, which was both good and bad as I had a hard time getting into the Christmas spirit this year.
